Bowen (Emanuel)

A Plan of the City and Liberties of London after the Dreadful Conflagration in the Year 1666,

£320

, , 1756.
derived from Wenceslas Hollar’s detailed plan in the immediate aftermath of the Great Fire, ‘A Map or Groundplot of the Citty of London’, of 1666, Bowen’s slightly reduced plan was produced for William Maitland’s ‘The History of London from its Foundation to the Present Time’, published in 1756, and then again in 1775. The title panel, extending across the top of the plan, continues with the description of what lies below, ‘The Blank Part whereof represents the Ruins and Extent of the Fire; & the Perspective that left Standing’. The plan extends from Bun-Hill and Finsbury Fields down to Bankside, and from Lincoln’s Inn Fields across to the Tower. Small ships and other river craft are shown on the Thames, along with a simple compass rose below the Tower. There are two inset key panels, upper right is a ‘Reference of remarkable places’, and lower left ‘The Names of all the Churches both in the City and Suburbs with Figures annexed referring to their situation in ye plan’,.
225 by 335mm (8¾ by 13¼ inches).
