Brewer (Henry William)

Bird's-Eye View of Oxford, 1894,

London, The Graphic, 1894.
issued as a supplement to The Graphic in 1894 (a corresponding view of Cambridge followed a week later), this panoramic view is looking from the east side of Oxford, as if floating above Magdalen Bridge crossing the river Cherwell, one’s eye following the numerous pedestrians and horse-drawn carriages and trams down High Street past Magdalen College and Tower, in the centre of the composition, to the heart of the compact city bristling with spires and domes, bounded on the far side by the river Thames and the Cotswold hills beyond. A key plate set within the title in the lower margin identifies 26 college buildings alphabetically, and numbers a further 34 churches, institutions and other landmarks. This complex scene is rendered with Brewer’s usual perfect clarity, another fine example of why he is considered one of the finest architectural illustrators of his day,
