Brandard (John) after John Thorpe.

Grand Parade, Hastings,

£175

Hastings, Thomas Mann, 1850.
one of eight locally published scenes from ‘Mann’s Views of Hastings and St Leonard’s’, after the local artist, John Thorpe, who was born in nearby Fairlight in 1813. This view shows promenaders on the beach walking amongst the rocks known as the Goat Ledge, opposite Warrior Square. In the distance is the symbolic archway that defined the entrance to James Burton’s elegant new seaside resort of St Leonards-on-Sea, a boundary that was later extended eastwards to encompass Warrior Square and Eversfield Place as far as White Rock,.
