the original artwork used for the front cover of The Spectator magazine, published on 22nd August, 1970, a ‘big head’ portrait of the West German politician, Willy Brandt (1913-1992), leader of the SPD from 1964 to 1987, and Chancellor from 1969 to 1974. He is depicted standing casting his shadow over Europe, with the cities of Berlin, Leningrad and Prague all named, symbolising his dominant role in European affairs. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971 for his encouragement of co-operation in Western Europe through the EEC, and for furthering reconciliation between West Germany and Eastern Europe.

Richard Willson (1939-2011) began as a cartoonist for The Observer in 1968, before moving to The Times and Sunday Times in the early 1970s. His popular and distinctive work also frequently appeared in The Spectator, Washington Post, New Statesman, and New Scientist,.
