the original artwork used for the front cover of The Spectator magazine, published on 16th June, 1970, a half-length ‘big head’ portrait of the Irish politician and former Taoiseach, Jack Lynch (1917-1999), seated at a table with a smoking hand grenade in front of him. Lynch was the leader of the Fianna Fail party from 1966 to 1979, and served two terms as the Irish premier, from 1966 to 1973, and from 1977 to 1979, during which time he was highly outspoken against the escalating troubles in Northern Ireland, campaigning for intervention by the United Nations in place of British armed forces.

Richard Willson (1939-2011) began as a cartoonist for The Observer in 1968, before moving to The Times and Sunday Times in the early 1970s. His popular and distinctive work also frequently appeared in The Spectator, Washington Post, New Statesman, and New Scientist,.
