Brewer (Henry William)

The Crisis in Egypt -

£375

Panoramic View of Cairo,
London, The Graphic, 1882.
issued as a supplement to The Graphic on June 17th, 1882, during the period of heightened tensions in Egypt, following the mutiny of Ahmed ‘Urabi (or Arabi Pashi, shortly before the formal outbreak of the Anglo-Egyptian War in July, when the British overturned the coup against Tewfik Pasha, the Khedive of Egypt, in order to protect their interests and investments in the country.
Despite the dramatic title, this spectacular panorama of Cairo depicts a city in tranquil splendour, ranging over the Pyramids of Gizeh, on the left, beyond the Nile which runs the full width of the scene, leading the eye from the Mameluke Aquaduct to the central high point of the Mosque of the Citadel to the ancient quarter on the right. It is rendered with perfect clarity by Brewer, considered one of the finest architectural illustrators of his day,
