London, William Little, 1850.
issued as a supplement to the Illustrated London News on 4th May, 1850, this elevated panoramic vista, looking east over the Eternal City towards the Apennines in the distance, is taken from the top of the Janiculan Hill during the Siege of Rome a year earlier. It shows the rough trenches of the French troops across the summit in the foreground, a ruined palazzo to the left, looking towards St Peter’s, and the Church of San Pietro in Montorio to the right, where the fiercest fighting of the siege was to take place,.
