the title continues ‘From the latest and best Observations, For Mr Tindal’s Continuation of Mr Rapin’s History’, the chart includes the Bristol Channel and the north coast of Somerset almost to Weston-super-Mare, with 4 inset charts above, each titled ‘Isles of Scilly’, ‘Falmouth Haven’, ‘Plymouth Sound’, and ‘Isle of Wight and ye adjacent Harbours’, a decorative title cartouche in the lower left corner, a compass rose mid-Channel.

Nicolas Tindal (1687-1774), chaplain of Greenwich Hospital and fellow of Trinity College, Oxford, translated and significantly expanded the history of England published in the 1720s by the French historian, Paul de Rapin, to encompass the reigns of James II to George II. It now appeared under the title ‘The History of England by Mr Rapin de Thoyras, continued from the Revolution to the accession of King George II by N. Tindal’.
