Rachel Carnegie (1901-1997) studied at the Slade and then further developed her printmaking at the Regent Street Polytechnic, where she met Augusta North, niece of the famous botanical artist, Marianne North. Having lost her own mother in infancy, Carnegie developed an almost filial relationship with North, who was twenty-three years her senior. The two made extensive painting and drawing trips to Paris and Algeria, and Carnegie frequently stayed on North’s farm at Wendover Dean in Buckinghamshire, where this scene is possibly set..
