French School.
Mr. Frison Ou Le Coiffeur A La Mode,
Paris, Chez Genty, c.1815.
an early 19th century French social satire, a common tableau composition of figures in a line, squarely in profile to the viewer, the artist-hairdresser and wigmaker on the left in a high-collared coat with instruments protruding from his pockets, leans back for a better view as he applies his outstretched tongs to the peculiarly styled hair of his grumpy client, her bonnet resting atop the central backrest of a double-sided bench, she sitting one side with a little dog on her lap, behind her sitting a bald gentleman of more jolly demeanor, holding aloft a very similarly styled wig to show his wife who stands to the right,.
