Paris, Chez Martinet, c.1815.
a French early 19th century Russian military costume satire, from the rare series ‘Armée des Souverains Alliés’, the army of the Allied Sovereigns which occupied France at the close of the Napoleonic War. A common tableau composition of figures in a line in various military uniforms, two facing the viewer, alternating with two others standing in profile in exaggerated forward-leaning poses, each captioned as from the Imperial Guard or elite troops, and a fifth figure presenting a rear view of a regular soldier in ill-fitting great coat described as ‘en négligé’,.
