Sylvia Green (1915-2004) was grew up in Bruton, Somerset, from where she went to study at Frome School of Art before going on to the Royal College of Art. She graduated in 1938 and began to design costumes for various dance companies, including for Dame Ninette de Valois’ Sadler’s Wells Ballet. This continued through the war, during which time this lithograph was created, sometime after which she also began to produce children’s book illustrations, and to teach art at the East London Institute. From the early 1960s, she became involved in creating and teaching ecclesiastical embroidery, culminating in a commission to make the choir cushions for Chichester Cathedral, in 2001..
