a political satire on the events of the 29th October, 1831, and the violent reaction by supporters of the Reform Bill to its rejection. This lead to widespread rioting, including this scene in Bristol. Sir Charles Wetherell (1770-1846), the Recorder of Bristol, is depicted fleeing for his life, his coat tails on fire, arms outstretched towards a portly ‘John Bull’ figure who says ‘Well you have found out the Reaction in Bristol by this time Charley – why you have got your tail burnt and I see you have left your Gallows’s behind you’, to which Wetherell replies ‘Save me save me _ the Bill the whole Bill & nothing but the Bill – Reform! Reform!I shall never be able to Weather-all this storm’. In the background a large crowd is silhouetted against a raging fire around two gallows..
