, S. Gans, 1831.
Probably simply a social satire mocking a very large lady enjoying the efforts of a young hussar to help her board a stagecoach, but with sufficient sexual innuendo to suggest a return to the popular subject of Marchioness Conyngham (1769/70-1861), notorious erstwhile mistress of George IV from 1819 until his death in 1830, but famed for her numerous affairs, including Tsar Nicholas I. From left to right, a lady waiting to board says ‘I can’t think what makes that lady so fond of clambering’, to which a passenger seated outside replies ‘Why miss don’t you see she’s got her silk stockings on’. Another passenger inside the coach bemoans ‘I wish that lady would either get up or down’, to which the coachman replies ‘Why, Sir, she’s a Fixture – she can’t get up and she won’t get down’. The large lady, herself, says to the gallant office pushing her up by her bottom, ‘You’re doing no good now – why don’t you lift up my legs’..
