A Transfer of East India Stock,
£150
, Thomas Cornell, 1783.
a satire on the two bills introduced by the Coalition in November 1783 in an attempt to transfer oversight of the East India Company’s holdings, and the patronage and sovereignty of India, itself, to a politically appointed set of commissioners, and away from the Crown and the Company, depicting Charles James Fox running towards an archway out of St James’s Palace, carrying East India House on his shoulders, a paper protruding from his pocket referencing these new arrangements, other papers on the ground and underfoot referring to stocks, bonds, directors, and the need to diminish the unwelcome growth of the crown’s influence. This print was hot off the press, it was even cited in ongoing debates around what was seen as a political power-grab,.
