after Richard Dalton (c.1715-1791), the artist and antiquary who was appointed Royal Librarian by the Prince of Wales, later George III, this study is of the famous classical statue more commonly referred to as the Dying Gaul, which was known to have been in the Capitoline Museum in Rome from at least 1737, and was first issued by Dalton in 1740. Although a later 18th century issue, it still bears the original dedication to the Right Honourable the Earl of Hertford, Agernon Seymour, who was elevated to the title of the seventh Duke of Somerset in 1749,
