a view from ‘Les Plus Beaux Monuments de Rome Ancienne’, showing the large vaulted arches in the ruins of the Temple of Peace, built by the Emperor Vespasian in the 1st century. This particular plate, engraved by Marco Carloni, is dedicated to the French diplomat and marshal, Henri Joseph d’Esparbès de Lussan, le Marquis d’Aubeterre.
Jean Barbault (1718-1762) was a French painter and engraver who travelled to Rome in 1747, where he remained, initially working under Giovanni Battista Piranesi before going on to produce his own magnificent series of views of both the ancient and the contemporary baroque monuments and buildings of the Eternal City..
