a view from ‘Les Plus Beaux Monuments de Rome Moderne’, centred on the Palazzo Farnese looking across the River Tiber. The 15th century Ponte Sisto in the foreground was commissioned {Pope Sixtus IV, after whom it was named. It was designed by Baccio Pontelli, and built on the foundations of the ancient Roman Pons Aurelius, also known as the Pons Antoninus. This particular plate, engraved by Giraud, is dedicated to Cardinal and Prince Domenico Orsini d’Aragona.

Jean Barbault (1718-1762) was a French painter and engraver who travelled to Rome in 1747, where he remained, initially working under Giovanni Battista Piranesi before going on to produce his own magnificent series of views of both the ancient and the contemporary baroque monuments and buildings of the Eternal City..
