Norman Janes (1892-1980) studied fine art at the Slade under Henry Tonks, but, separately, learnt etching in the evenings  from William Palmer Robins at the Central School of Art, before going on to study under Sir Frank Short and Malcolm Osborne at the Royal College of Art. His early work concentrated on figure studies and portraits, as we see in this pensive example, turning more towards landscapes in the later 1920s..
