, C.E.M.A., 1944.
from a series of lithographs commissioned by C.E.M.A. (the Commission for the Encouragement of Music and Art), the precursor to the Arts Council. As with other, similar, series of colourful and uplifting lithographs produced by various publishers in Britain in the 1930s and ’40s, these were intended for public display, in this case specifically in the work place, to lift workers’ morale during the latter stages of the Second World War. It depicts the Air Training Corp undertaking glider practice on rolling English downland. Vivian Pitchforth (1895-1982) was born in Yorkshire and trained first at Leeds, then at the Royal College of Art, in London. He held teaching jobs at numerous art schools throughout his career, and during the Second World War was an official war artist..
