Stow’s Survey.
St. Martins Church,
£180
London, John Strype, 1755.
from the 6th edition of Stow’s Survey, which was originally issued in 1598. This was the 2nd issue of John Strype’s updated edition, first released without this plate in 1720. Although it bears no artist’s or engraver’s name, it had also been separately published around the same time with a French title by John Bowles. It shows a perspective view of St Martin’s-in-the-Fields in central London, near Charing Cross, designed by James Gibbs, and built in 1722-24. There is a title banderole upper centre, and a large parchment scroll-cartouche centre right bears a detailed floor plan and scale of feet,.
