A French impression of English politics

Election Anglaise, Lord-Iginal faisant sa motion

As if to prove nothing is ever new, could our current, and seemingly unique, political times be merely an echo of English political history? How apt is this 200-year-old French satire of the ‘Election Anglaise’, by Henri Buguet and published by Aaron Martinet, depicting a grotesque caricature of a portly fair-haired politician orating bombastically, fists flying amongst the rabble at his feet, aloof grandees looking on with cynicism in the background, while a heavily veiled figure of wealth exerts financial influence in the foreground.
